The monastery of Montserrat
In 1025, Oliba, abbot of Ripoll and bishop of Vic, founded a new monastery in the hermitage of Santa María de Montserrat. In a short time, the small monastery received pilgrims and visitors, who contributed to make known among the people the stories of the miracles and wonders that the Virgin worked.
In 1409, the Montserrat monastery became an independent abbey. Between the years 1493 and 1835, a time of profound reforms, growth and splendor, Montserrat was part of the Congregation of Valladolid.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the monastery became a cultural center of the first order, although the Napoleonic war (1808-1811) and the confiscation of 1835 brought destruction and abandonment.
The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) meant that the monastery had to be abandoned again. However, the Government of Catalonia preserved Montserrat from looting and destruction.
At present, Montserrat is modernized to continue serving pilgrims a thousand years after its foundation.
